Our Program

 People

The Texas State MFA is a gathering place for the national literary community.

  • Students: Our students come from a highly competitive pool of applicants, drawn from across the country, a range of backgrounds, and varied literary aesthetics.
  • Faculty: In addition to our 11 distinguished faculty members, we host an internationally celebrated writer as our Endowed Chair, a rotating teaching position currently held by Karen Russell. Additionally, our adjunct thesis faculty, a large group of respected writers and editors, provides feedback on student thesis manuscripts. Every Spring semester, the program also hosts a poet-in-residence (Ada Limon in 2019), who teaches craft classes and hosts a variety of unique events.
  • Wide Network and Community: Our visiting writers series is one of the most robust in the country. Writers commonly teach a master class, enjoy dinner with students, and host a craft Q&A, in addition to several readings. We also regularly bring national editors and agents to campus, allowing students to engage with the publishing industry. Altogether, we host a significant literary event for our students during most weeks of the semester

Location

San Marcos is located about a half hour to both Austin and San Antonio, in the arborous and scenic Texas Hill Country. Our students primarily live in San Marcos or Austin.
