Enjoy a relaxing Wine & Cheese Social in The Wittliff Collections galleries on the 7th floor of the Alkek Library as a part of Graduate Student Appreciation Week. This informal event includes a brief program at 4:30 pm, which will feature remarks from Dean Andrea Golato and highlight select library resources. Mingle with fellow graduate students and library staff, enjoy some food and drinks, and get tickets for raffle drawings. Registration is limited and required for this event. You must be over 21 and have proof of age in order to drink wine.

Join us in the new DataSpace (Alkek 452) and learn about all the library resources and support available for discovering, exploring, managing, and preserving research data.


10-11 a.m. – Explore our Archives

Stop by the Special Collections and Archives Reading Room (Alkek 204) to learn about how our collections support the research lifecycle and tell the story of Texas State University, as well as the Hays County region. From here, you can also enjoy a tour of our Digitization Lab, where collections are preserved for online exploration. 


11-noon – Discover the cultural heritage of Texas, the Southwest, and Mexico
 
Come by the Wittliff Collections Reading Room 7th Floor and learn about the amazing treasures in these collections as gathered from the region’s storytellers; including writers, photographers, musicians, filmmakers, and other artists that educate, engage and inspire.

This workshop introduces you to IBM SPSS Statistics, a program that can assist users with analyzing, organizing, and visualizing data. Attendees will learn how to prepare data for visualization, run a basic frequency/descriptive analysis, and create visual representations of their analysis. This workshop is open to all skillsets and comfortability with SPSS or data analysis programs. Attendees will have the opportunity to follow along in their own SPSS windows and test functions.  This is a hybrid format workshop, offered both in person in the DataSpace Lab (ALK 452) and online through Zoom. For all those interested in attending in person: there is no RSVP or reservation system for seats in the lab. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to create a variety of data visualizations using the powerful ggplot package in R. By the end of the session, you will be able to produce scatter plots, boxplots, and barplots, set universal plot settings, and apply faceting to efficiently display data subsets. Additionally, you will explore how to modify plot aesthetics, such as axis labels and colors, and build complex, customized plots from data in a data frame. This workshop is ideal for beginners looking to enhance their data visualization skills in R.

We will discuss a wide range of aspects and best practices for making digital maps, including use of color, fonts, labeling, symbology, and basemaps. We will look at examples from professional cartographers and discuss lessons we can learn to improve our individual maps. 


 


This is an online-only webinar that will be conducted through Zoom. No hands-on demo or tutorial will be conducted, but attendees are encouraged to take notes and ask questions in order to successfully apply these learnings to their own projects. Presentation slides will be shared after the event.
